Radiation Oncology Treatment Technologies
The Swedish Cancer Care Center recently enhanced our radiation oncology program by obtaining new technology that allows us to offer the latest minimally invasive cancer treatment techniques.
Using these highly advanced treatment options, our compassionate team works closely with each patient and his/her medical team to ensure that the best options for cancer care are being utilized. Our radiation oncology team participates in weekly meetings to discuss each patient's case, to ensure that the best, most coordinated care is being provided.
Varian Clinac iX Linear Accelerator - New in 2009, this linear accelerator allows us to offer leading edge radiation treatments to target cancer cells using state-of-the-art radiation therapy. This new technology allows us to treat smaller lesions in shorter amounts of time, reducing patient side effects. Learn more about the Clinac iX Linear Accelerator.
With this new technology, we are providing:
- Stereotactic* Radiosurgery (SRS): This treatment is used to treat brain or spinal tumors by delivering a high dose of radiation through focused beams on a targeted location in the brain or spine. The region is carefully planned using detailed three-dimensional imaging. This therapy can be completed in as few as one to five days of treatment. It is best used for small, well-defined tumors that are located away from sensitive normal structures.
- Stereotactic* Body Radiotherapy (SRBT): This treatment is similar to SRS, except that is treats tumors in parts of the body other than the brain or spine.
- Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT): By controlling (or modulating) the radiation beams in multiple, very small volumes, this treatment allows us to achieve pin-point precision, sparing healthy tissue and creating fewer side effects for patients.
- Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT): Tumors are not stationary and move between appointments; this treatment accounts for that movement and uses innovative radiographic, and fluoroscopic and cone-beam CT modes to ensure that the most targeted treatment is performed.
- Respiratory Gating: This option allows the treatment to be timed with the patient's breathing, providing a much more precise, continuous pattern of treatment. This option is especially important for tumors in the lung and upper gastrointestinal tract.
- Accelerated Partial Breast Radiation (APBI) with Balloon Brachytherapy or external radiation: This treatment is designed for breast cancer patients who have had a lumpectomy. It treats only the part of the breast from which the tumor was removed, which creates a shorter, faster treatment and also delivers less radiation to unaffected areas surrounding the breast (i.e. the lungs, heart, ribs, muscles).
- Rapid Arc: This treatment option delivers treatments two to eight times faster than other treatments and also offers an increased level of precision in delivery of radiation therapy. Using a treatment planning algorithm that changes three things throughout the treatment: rotation of the gantry (frame), the shape of the aperture (the hole through which the beam travels) and the delivery dose rate. The result is a faster, more precise treatment for our patients!
*Stereotactic is a medical term meaning precise positioning.
Breast Brachytherapy - This treatment for breast cancer patients involves inserting small flexible catheters (small tubes) into the breast. At scheduled times throughout the course of treatment (usually five days) the catheters are connected to a machine for delivery of internal radiation therapy. After the treatment is complete, the catheters are removed. Swedish uses MammoSite and Contura.
