Denver Bariatric Surgery Center at Swedish Performs Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

The Roux-en-Y (pronounced ROO-en-why; abbreviated RNY) gastric bypass procedure is the most common type of gastric bypass surgery. During this procedure, the surgeon uses surgical staples to create a pouch in the upper stomach. The pouch is connected directly to the small intestine, bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine. The surgery typically takes about two hours. At Swedish, our bariatric surgeon performs the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass as a minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery, meaning the procedure is done through small incisions with the aid of a tiny camera. In comparison to a traditional or open procedure, the laparoscopic procedure has many benefits, including:

  • A shorter hospital stay
  • Lowered risk of infection
  • Often a faster, less painful recovery following surgery
