Information and Preparation Information
This test is to identify a pheochromocytomas, neuroblastomas and carcinoid tumors. Please arrive in the Radiology department for the admissions process. A nuclear medicine technologist will greet you for the appointment. A small intravenous (I.V.) line will be started by the technologist for the exam. The technologist will inject a radioactive tracer through the I.V. The radiotracer will not cause any allergic reaction or discomfort. Post injection you will be asked to return for imaging 24 hours and 48 hours (slight chance of 72 hour images). Twenty-four hour imaging will take approximately 40-60 minutes. At 48 hours, imaging will take 30 minutes. During this time, you may eat or drink as usual and resume normal activities.
Before Your Adrenal Medulla MIBG (Metaiodobenzylguanidine) Scan
- You need to take SSKI (potassium iodide) 3 times a day for 2 days (beginning the day before the injection); SSKI must be prescribed by your physician and purchased from an outside pharmacy
- Consult your physician before taking any medications and how long you need to be off them
