DMSA Cortical Renogram at Swedish
Information and Preparation Instructions
The purpose of this exam is to look for renal scarring, acute/chronic pyelneonephritis, and differentiation of renal masses and quantification of regional renal function. Please arrive in the Radiology department for the admissions process. A nuclear medicine technologist will greet you for the appointment. A small intravenous (I.V.) line will be started by the technologist for the exam. The technologist will inject a radioactive tracer through the I.V. The radiotracer will not cause any allergic reaction or symptoms. Imaging will take place 3 hours post injection during which time you may leave, resume normal activities and eat or drink. Imaging will take approximately 1 hour.
Before Your DMSA Cortical Renogram
- ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors must be discontinued prior to exam
- ARB (Angiotensin II receptor blockers) medication should be discontinued prior to exam
- Drink 500 mL or 16 oz. of fluid prior to the exam
