Information and Preparation Instructions
The purpose of this exam is to look for a potential site of internal bleeding. Note: This is primarily performed on an inpatient basis. Please arrive in the Radiology department for the admissions process. A nuclear medicine technologist will greet you for the appointment. A small intravenous (I.V.) line will be started by the technologist for the exam. Please wear loose, warm, comfortable clothing. The technologist will draw blood from your I.V. which will be tagged with a radioactive tracer. The radiotracer will not cause any allergic reaction or discomfort. The tagging process takes 30 minutes after which the blood will be re-injected. Imaging will begin immediately and will last at least 1 hour with potential delayed imaging at 4, 6, and 12 hours.
