Information and Preparation Instructions

Breast Patients

The purpose of this exam is to look for a potential site lymph node activity. Please arrive in the Radiology department for the admissions process. A nuclear medicine technologist will greet you for the appointment. A  radiologist will inject a radioactive tracer. The tracer will not cause any allergic reaction or symptoms. Imaging will begin immediately. You will then be taken to pre-op for surgery.

Before Your Sentinel Node Lymphoscintigraphy (Breast)

  • No special preparation for this exam
  • Patient may experience some soreness around the injection site

Melanoma Patients

The purpose of this exam is to look for metastatic invasion of lymph nodes. Please arrive in the Radiology department for the admissions process. A nuclear medicine technologist will greet you for the appointment. The injection site will be prepped and numbed using a topical cream. A radiologist will inject a radioactive tracer around the melanoma. The tracer will not cause any allergic reaction or symptoms. Imaging will begin 5 minutes post injection. The radiologist will mark the skin indicated where the lymph node was visualized. You will then be taken to pre-op for surgery.
