Thyroid Ablation Treatment for Thyroid Cancer with Radioiodine 131 (I-131)

Information and Preparation Instructions

This procedure is typically done for patients with thyroid cancer at least 6 weeks following a thyroidectomy (removal of all or part of the thyroid) to remove any residual thyroid tissue left from the surgery. If possible, please travel alone to minimize exposure to others following treatment. You will return for a whole body scan 10 days following treatment to evaluate how much thyroid tissue was left over from the surgery, and if there is any thyroid metastatic disease. A technologist and a radiologist will explain the treatment to you in detail before you take the I-131 pill.
